First, allow me to say I am proud and honored to be the principal at the Military Magnet Academy for the past eleven years. I received my undergraduate degree in history from the University of Baltimore, Baltimore, Maryland, and my Master of Arts degree in Teaching from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, Alaska. I received my Master of Arts degree in school administration and Specialist in Education degree from the Citadel, Charleston, SC. I started my career in education as a middle school social studies teacher after 26 years of active military duty. While on active duty, I served as an Airborne Ranger Infantryman.
The Military Magnet Academy is a caring school where all cadets are challenged to learn everyday. The Military Magnet Academy prepares students to become competent, disciplined, and responsible citizens by providing the necessary learning environment. The Military Magnet Academy is committed to student academics, extracurricular activities, and parent and community involvement. The academic program develops the whole person by providing a foundation for success in today’s world of high technology.
The Military Magnet Academy high school received an absolute rating of “Excellent” and an Improvement Rating of “Excellent” on the 2010 – 2011 South Carolina School Report Card. The middle school received an Absolute Rating of “Average” an Improvement Rating of“Average”. The Military Magnet Academy was awarded SACS accreditation in February 2012, and received the Palmetto Gold Award for student achievement and closing the achievement gap. The Military Magnet Academy has implemented the Coherent Curriculum, MAP, and Benchmark Testing to improve instruction and further improve student achievement. The Military Magnet Academy makes use of technology in providing academic assistance through the implementation of afterschool programs, advisory programs, Study Island, Academy of Reading/Math,APEX, Gear Up, SAT Prep, College and Careers for juniors and seniors, tutorial/remedial programs and summer enrichment programs. Gender-specific classes, reduced student-teacher ratio math classes, and two sixty-minute period ELA/readingclasses were implemented in 2010-2011. The administration is ensuring that all teachers, current and future, are highly qualified. In addition, the staff also includes a state literacy specialist, and a lead teacher.
The Military Magnet Academy has the following parental programs currently in place: PTSO/PASS Open House Night, ELA/Basic Skills Training in the APEX lab, quarterly newsletters, website, student agendas, telephone call-out system, Parent Utilization Toolkit, Sharp School, monthly parent seminars, and parent conferences. MMA has a military program focusing on character education, leadership, and self-discipline to assist students with academic excellence.
An awards ceremony is conducted quarterly to recognize students and teachers for their academic achievement.
