Sabri Mitchell (senior at MMA) wrote about her time in a 1st grade classroom at Chicora through her work with Elevate Charleston:
"Reflecting on my time in the classroom so far, I can honestly say it has been a transformative experience. I didn’t expect to form such strong bonds with the students; their enthusiasm and curiosity have made every day rewarding. The highs have been those moments of connection seeing a student grasp a difficult concept or watching their confidence grow. However, there have been challenges too, like managing diverse learning needs and navigating classroom dynamics. Celebrating small victories, like a successful project or a student’s breakthrough, has been incredibly fulfilling. I’ve realized how impactful my presence can be; just being there consistently has helped some students feel more supported and engaged. Overall, this journey has deepened my appreciation for teaching and the unique relationships that develop in the classroom.”
Elevate CHS is elevating the teaching profession by encouraging a diverse group of high school students to pursue a career in teaching by providing them with unique coursework (college courses and teaching internships), experiences (college visits, guest speakers, elementary school reading/math buddy program), and support (college scholarship & application assistance). Elevate CHS will also help alleviate the teacher shortage currently faced in CCSD by extending the pipeline of teacher recruitment into high schools.
