Chef Kim Ortego

Welcome to Military Magnet Academy, Culinary Arts. I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to work with your son/daughter for this school year. My name is Chef Kim Ortego and I am your CTE (Career and Technology Education) teacher. Career & Technology Education prepares our students for outstanding college and career readiness through Programs of Study grouped into 16 clusters based on a common set of knowledge and skills. State recognized CTE programs are offered here at MMA.

My approach in teaching is to provide ample opportunity for each child to have hands on experience with culinary applications, be exposed to real world examples of work ethic, and develop employability skills that apply to any professional endeavor. My hope is that your child will be prepared to face the challenges of life after high school and continue their education in the culinary field, professional arena, college environment, or the military.

I am a graduate of Johnson & Wales University. I received my Associates degree in Culinary Arts and I have worked in the Charleston area in for over 20 years in various culinary enterprises.  I have worked in customer service, catering, gourmet to go, taught cooking classes in the community, worked as a personal chef, and most recently as the Executive Chef of the Lowcountry Food Bank.  I am excited for the opportunities this year holds for me and my students.
